This week, Rotorua councillors unanimously decided to allocate $40,000 for removing the distinctive metal 'fins' on the Energy Events Centre's facade. The unique features have suffered corrosion damage, prompting the need for their removal. Rotorua, a town on its namesake lake on New Zealand's North Island, is renowned for its geothermal activity and Maori culture.
During the community and district development committee meeting on November 8, 2023, elected members agreed to the expenditure. It was highlighted that challenges with the building stemmed partly from cost-saving choices made by past councils.
Thomas Collé, the corporate services group manager, revealed a mistake in using steel instead of aluminium in certain sections of the building. This error had cascading consequences, leading to increased maintenance costs for various aspects of the structure, notably the roof, which had to be replaced within a decade.
Collé emphasized the adverse effects of steel's reaction to the corrosive environment prevalent in that location. He pointed out that aluminium would have been a more suitable choice as it does not exhibit the same vulnerability to corrosion in such conditions.
Situated at Sulphur Point, a renowned area for geothermal activity, the centre experienced these challenges due to the corrosive nature of the environment. The corrosion has affected the 'fins' on the facade and the steel structure supporting them on the building, as explained to the councillors.
The repair of the metal fins, priced at $200,000 and requiring crane assistance for removal, was deemed unnecessary by Collé. These fins, serving a dual purpose of aesthetics and sun protection for windows, presented an opportunity for transformation.
Collé suggested exploring alternative heat-protection methods, such as solar tints on windows and repurposing the space for outdoor meetings and conferences. The required $40,000 would be sourced from the existing renewals budget.
Deputy Mayor Sandra Kai Fong expressed agreement, considering it an obvious and wise decision. Mayor Tania Tapsell viewed it as a chance to rejuvenate the building, aligning with the trend of other event centres undergoing similar upgrades.
However, the redesign work is set to commence, and it is anticipated that the metal fins will be removed in approximately six weeks. This process will, in part, coincide with a routine maintenance period.
