Downstream recap: US starts anti-dumping probe into aluminium extrusion imports; China’s aluminium processing PMI declines 9.1%

The downstream aluminium industry witnessed some of the big shot events this week, such as the United States initiated anti-dumping investigation against 15 extruded aluminium product exporting countries, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal assured that no unfair carbon taxes could affect the domestic aluminium and steel industry, and Tianshan Aluminium Group conducted the first trial run of its 2# casting-rolling machine for the Shihezi Xinren battery aluminium foil project.
The United States Department of Commerce commenced an anti-dumping investigation into aluminium extrusion imports from 15 countries, including Vietnam and Mexico. Mexico is the largest exporter of aluminium extrusions to the United States, accounting for US$660 million of US$3.19 billion of the US total imports as of 2022. Vietnam is the fourth biggest exporter, accounting for 7.6 per cent of the United States total imports from 15 countries in 2022.

China’s aluminium processing industry reported this week a 9.1 per cent decline in the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for October 2023. According to the Shanghai Metals Market, the PMI for China’s aluminium processing industry stood at 47 per cent. Except for aluminium wire and cable, new orders for aluminium foils, plate/sheet and strip, construction extrusion, and primary/secondary aluminium alloys decreased. The PMI for aluminium plate/sheet and strip, aluminium foil, industrial extrusion, primary aluminium alloy, and secondary aluminium alloy fell below 50 per cent in October.

On Tuesday, November 7, India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal assured the domestic aluminium and steel industry that no unfair taxes in the form of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) would be accepted. He said India had already expressed concerns over the carbon tax with the European Union (EU) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Novelis Inc. announced its second quarter results for FY2023-24, disclosing net sales fell by 14.6 per cent Y-o-Y from US$4.8 billion to US$4.1 billion. A dip in aluminium flat rolled product shipments to 933,000 tonnes due to sluggish global demand could be attributed to the fall in Novelis' net sales in Q2. In six months of FY24, the company's net sales amounted to US$8.2 billion, down by 18 per cent from US$10 billion during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma’aden) extended its partnership with luxury car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Their partnership dates back to 2016. Ma’aden exports over 100,000 tonnes of high-quality aluminium sheets for use in JLR luxury cars. These sheets are essential in the production of JLR’s aluminium-bodied vehicles.

According to a report this week, Luoyang Aluminum-based New Material Industry Alliance is officially established, marking a significant milestone for the city's industrial development. The alliance brings together 55 enterprises, third-party service institutions, financial institutions, research institutes, universities, social groups, and terminal application customers from the industry.
