Archipelago Yachts has announced the successful completion of the design for its breakthrough zero-carbon leisure vessle, the Archipelago zero.63, in conjunction with Chartwell Marine. The Archipelago zero.63 uses environmentally friendly aluminium materials designed to minimise ecological effects. One notable characteristic of this watercraft is its large methanol tank, which holds 10,000 litres and enables an estimated range of around 2,500 nautical miles.
This attribute enhances its versatility and makes it a suitable choice for those seeking extended expeditions. This vessel offers a high level of luxury, with four spacious rooms that can accommodate up to eight guests. Each cabin has private ensuite amenities, providing a pleasant and environmentally aware sailing experience.
"Our vessel design uses methanol-to-hydrogen reforming technology to power a modern and attractive, silent, zero-carbon 63" leisure vessel. The yacht will be state of the art for zero-carbon technology, built from low-impact aluminium, using recycled materials wherever possible. There are plenty of electric leisure vessels in the market which can travel short distances quickly or long distances slowly, but none can perform in high sea states, cross oceans, and be zero-carbon all at the same time," said Dr Stephen Weatherley, founder and managing director of Archipelago Yachts.
The Archipelago zero.63 has a ground-breaking parallel hybrid system that smoothly combines renewable energy from a pair of methanol reformers and hydrogen fuel cells. The yacht can sail quietly at up to 10 knots thanks to its revolutionary propulsion technology. The design contains a direct-injection methanol engine for high-speed performance, allowing the boat to attain a peak speed of 22 knots.
Archipelago zero. 63 is prepared to make a significant impact because of its unique mix of zero-carbon methanol fuel and modern hydrogen technology, which provides a compelling answer to the issues of maritime decarbonisation. Extensive examinations were done in partnership with Lloyd's Register to assure the safety and integrity of this pioneering vessel, ensuring the highest standards in design and construction.
This innovative initiative is by Innovate UK's "Transport Vision 2050," which seeks to integrate methanol as a feasible maritime fuel, with a specific goal of achieving about 25 per cent utilisation by the year 2050. The acquisition of an Innovate UK Smart Grant by Chartwell Maritime serves as a testament to the company's commitment to the advancement of sustainable maritime technologies.
Archipelago Yachts and Chartwell Marine are ready to construct and launch the Methanol Pathfinder UK. This one-of-a-kind demonstration vessel will illustrate the potential of methanol as a marine fuel, paving the way for a greener future for the maritime sector.
The Methanol Pathfinder UK will serve as a proof-of-concept platform, instilling confidence in maritime makers and inventors. It promises to be inexpensive to create, making it an appealing offer for banks and investors. Furthermore, its hydrodynamic design, which is evocative of crew and fast ferry transport vehicles, offers up possibilities for commercial exploitation and deployment across the globe.
